From 2006 to 2010, I was a councillor for Lee Green ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. During that time, I blogged regularly and in 2009 I won the Tim Garden Award for the Best Blog by a Liberal Democrat Holding Public Office. My blog posts from my term of office are archived here in case they prove of use to former constituents, or to those who share my annoyance with faulty street furniture
My colleague Cllr Chris Maines, who represents Blackheath Ward, has asked me to let you know about a campaign he’s running to Save Blackheath Fireworks.
This year’s fireworks could be the last as the Labour Mayor is considering scrapping the fireworks to save cash. Chris and the Lib Dems are opposing this move, as we believe the fireworks are an event which brings the whole community together, and also provide extra custom for the shops and venues in Blackheath. More importantly, doing away with an organised display will inevitably lead to more people buying fireworks to use themselves, with a subsequent rise in accidents. Professionally organised displays, like the one in Blackheath reduce accidents and allow people to enjoy fireworks safely.
You can sign Chris’ petition here. There’s also a Facebook Group you can join at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=29997552511
You can read more about this – including quotes from Chris, the Mayor and the Blackheath Society in the Newsshopper.
