From 2006 to 2010, I was a councillor for Lee Green ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. During that time, I blogged regularly and in 2009 I won the Tim Garden Award for the Best Blog by a Liberal Democrat Holding Public Office. My blog posts from my term of office are archived here in case they prove of use to former constituents, or to those who share my annoyance with faulty street furniture
You know when you decide to get away from it all, and then one of the first things you see reminds you of home? Well, that’s the experience I had during my hols. We had a fantastic couple of weeks in Canada, but the name of the Toronto car park we parked in on our first evening there did cause a wry smile…Then, after visiting Niagara Falls and heading up to the Algonquin National Park, we stopped off for petrol in Guelph, Ontario – and drove straight into a by-election*… You just can’t get away from Liberals, even when you try…

I’m now back, and ploughing through hundreds of emails (to my Council address and a similar number in my day job!). If you’ve emailed me over the last couple of weeks, please do bear with me – I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
*I understand the by-election’s now been cancelled, as the (Tory) Candidan PM has called a general election – so Guelph will elect its new MP on October 14th with the rest of Canda, rather than today, as was planned. Best of luck to Frank Valeriote!
