Car club comes to Lee Green

August 12th, 2008
I’ve resisted the urge to title this post “My Streetcar Desire” because I used that in a printed copy of Focus back in 2007 when we launched our campaign to bring a car club to Lee Green*.   But my desires have been sated, and we now have a car club (run by Streetcar) in Lee Green!

Car clubs are a great alternative to individual car ownership.   The car’s there when you need it, but you don’t have the overheads of car ownership.  Users say they think more carefully before using the car – which reduces unnecessary trips, and of course because people share the car, it means fewer cars competing for parking spaces in local streets.

Streetcar have parked a VW Golf just off Lee High Road, in the rear car park of Meridian Court, 166 Lee High Road.   You can join the car club online for £49.50 a year, and then rent the car whenever you need it – for as little as half an hour at a time.

The car club’s obviously proving popular, as when Paul and I went to have a look at it, the VW Golf was out on the road.  I’m going to ask Streetcar to attend our next local assembly, or at least send along some leaflets, so we can promote the facility.  Streetcar are actively looking for more parking bays in our area so they can expand their service, so if you have a driveway going spare, they’d like to hear from you!
