People’s Day

July 13th, 2008

Peoples' Day 2008This time last year, I was inter-railing round Europe.  That did mean I was enjoying much better weather than we’ve had this week, but also meant I missed Lewisham People’s Day.  So it was good to walk up to Mountsfield Park on Saturday for my first People’s Day in two years.

I helped out for a bit on the Lewisham Lib Dem tombola stall, which was good fun.  I can’t say I was thrilled with my sole prize – a bottle of shampoo large enough to keep someone with my hairline in shampoos until the next People’s Day.   This was especially disappointing given that one of Cllr Andrew Milton’s infamous Daleks was up for grabs, but on the plus side, we raised plenty of money for party funds – and standing on a stall seems to be a good way of catching up with people (they come to you!)

Once I got a chance to wander round, it was good to see Broomleigh there talking to residents about the stock transfer proposals and also painting faces and making badges.   Also saw some old colleagues from Hyde, and Streetcar were there with one of their car club vehicles.   I didn’t find the FUSS stall, but I did see plenty of Lee Green locals on stalls belonging to various other good causes.   Plus lots of stalls from the Council – including the Be A Councillor stall and the Local Assemblies Team.

All in all, an afternoon well spent – almost compensation for not being somewhere with better weather…!
