From 2006 to 2010, I was a councillor for Lee Green ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. During that time, I blogged regularly and in 2009 I won the Tim Garden Award for the Best Blog by a Liberal Democrat Holding Public Office. My blog posts from my term of office are archived here in case they prove of use to former constituents, or to those who share my annoyance with faulty street furniture
Residents on Southbrook Road will soon be consulted by TfL (Transport for London) on possible changes to the Hail and Ride sections of the 273 bus route which runs from Lewisham, Tesco – Hither Green – Lee – Grove Park – Chislehurst – Petts Wood.
From TfL’s consultation letter:
This route operates on a Hail and Ride basis in Manor Park, Staplehurst Road, Fernbrook Road and Southbrook Road. Following discussions with LB Lewisham and in conjunction with the proposed introduction of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), we propose to introduce fixed bus stops in these roads. Stops have been identified following a survey arranged with TfL, the bus operator and the Council. The Police were also invited to attend and will receive this consultation letter.
Details of the proposed stopping points on Southbrook Road are:
Towards Petts Wood:
- outside no: 34
- near the rear of the ‘Northbrook’ pub.
Towards Lewisham:
- outside no: 3
- outside no: 35 (option for shelter being investigated)
Subject to the consultation, TFL propose to implement fixed stops as detailed above. At this stage there are no proposals for shelters apart from the options indicated above.
Please let us have your comments – and of you live on Southbrook Road, don’t forget to respond to TFL yourself too – a good response rate increases the chances of TFL listening to residents.

I live on Southbrook Road. I object to the proposal for any permanent bus stops in our road.
I would now like to add an objection to a bus shelter. The numbers of people using the bus stop would not warrent it. It is not appropriate in this quiet residential street.
Hi Barbara, we live in Southbrook as well. Unfortunately, we feel that it is a quiet residential street no more; it’s become a rat-run which is not helped in the least by buses roaring up and down.
We are also totally opposed to fixed bus stops, since, if we really must have the 273 imposed on us, the hail & ride seems to work. Very recently, an earlier agreement between TFL & Lewisham Council – stating that no bus stops would be located outside residential properties – has been changed WITHOUT CONSULTATION with residents. We’ve not even been informed, only found out by accident. The upshot of that is that they are trying to build a bus stop right outside our homes (it affects 3 houses). Apart from the noise & pollution, we will have to put up with people just a few yards away peering into the front of our home, possibly chucking litter and so on.
