From 2006 to 2010, I was a councillor for Lee Green ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. During that time, I blogged regularly and in 2009 I won the Tim Garden Award for the Best Blog by a Liberal Democrat Holding Public Office. My blog posts from my term of office are archived here in case they prove of use to former constituents, or to those who share my annoyance with faulty street furniture
On the Sustainable Development committee, we’re currently looking at what we’ve rather cumbersomly termed ‘individual alternatives to car use’ – basically non-public transport altenatives to the car, like walking, cycling or using a car club.
At our last meeting we took evidence from a variety of people, including Roger Stocker, chair of Lewisham Cyclists, who gave me a postcard about the Connect2 project, which aims to get people walking and cycling by providing new routes right across the UK. Connect 2 is one of four projects competing for the Big Lottery Fund’s The People’s £50 Million contest. The winner of the fund will be decided by public vote next weekend (7th-10th November). However, you can vote online already.
I’ve voted for Connect2, because £600,000 of the £50 million will be spent here in south east London on this project which will reopen an old railway bridge at South Bermondsey, creating links through the Silwood Estate, across to Deptford town centre and on to Greenwich via the Ha’penny Hatch Bridge. It’s well worth our support.
So get online, and get voting!
